Salman Rushdie

On June 9, 2010 09:33AM PDT

Just picked up a book that the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation put out called AIDS Sutra. One of the stories was written by Salman Rushdie. I didn't know much about him so I looked into some of his stuff including The Satanic Verses. Just found out that there is a fatwa against his life for all of eternity, because of how the Muslim population in 1989 received the book. Some of his associates including a publisher in Norway were stabbed to death. Crazy!
I can't believe this band is not mainstream...but then again I'm glad they are not.

i watched a really good biography about Rushdie, and it's incredible that he's alive today. i can't imagine spending that long of a period of time legitimately fearing for your life 24 hours a day. according to this biography the fatwa was sort of unofficially called off after he had been in hiding for the better part of a decade. hence why he can now appear in public such as the Housing Works benefit with dredg in NYC and his recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher. my vague understanding of the satanic verses (the book that pissed off the entire Muslim world, apparently) is that it is a novel based loosely on some sort of controversial passage from the Qur'an that more or less contradicts many core Islamic beliefs. it's a great example of the kind of violence and terror that religions often sponsor in defense (or offense) of their ideals.
